The History of St. Peter's Clinic  

 

The diocese has opened a diocesan clinic in 2005 for the service of the poor and vulnerable people living in the town of Pathein. The clinic has been running with own little resources and donations that the diocese can contribute. During Nagis Cyclone in 2008, the clinic was of great service to the cyclone affected victims reaching out the affected villages. Health talks on personal hygiene and seasonal diseases are given to the village community.

This diocesan clinic is now staffed with 2 doctors and 3 nurses located in St.Peter’s Cathedral compound. Open daily in the morning for about 3 hours and the remaining time is used for providing assistance to those patients to be transferred to the general hospital of Pathein.

Geographical Background of Pathein Diocese

The Republic of the Union of Myanmar is geographically and politically composed of seven Regions and seven States. The Diocese of Pathein squarely situated in Ayeyawady Region (Southwest part of Myanmar) is spread over an extensive area of some 262,228 square miles with a teeming population of about 7.5 millions. It is bordered in the North by Bago Region which includes the Diocese of Pyay; in the East by Yangon Region with the sprawling Archdiocese of Yangon and in the Southeast, instead, with Mon State and Tanintharyi Region where the Diocese of Mawlamyaing exists. The Diocese of Pathein lies peacefully entrenched in the extreme Southwest part of Myanmar-bounded along its extensive coasts by the Bay of Bengal and the Gulf of Martaban. The bulk of the entire Diocese of Pathein is comprised of this Delta region of Myanmar with all major rivers from the North ultimately find their ways down South and criss-cross this whole plain with their streams – big and small, before plunging homewards for the sea.

National Training School of  Catechists

The National Training School for Catechists (NTSC) was established on 2^nd February, 1956 and it was initiated by the formation of missionary priest, Rev. Fr. Martin Nabize to sow the seed of Christian Faith in Myanmar. From the time of Bishop Victor Bazin and Bishop George U Kyaw as principal of NTSC formation up to now, 1,256 catechists have been begotten for the radiation of Gospel value across the plains, mountain ranges and valley.

Historical Sketch of Pathein Diocese

The Diocese of Pathein (formerly known as Bassein) is located in Ayeyawady Region serving the Poe Karen in Pathein and Myaungmya Missions and the Sakaw Karen around Hinthada Mission. The early Missionaries in this Southwest part of the country were the Oblates of Mary Immaculate delegated from Rome. Then the Society of Foreign Mission Paris came taking up the mission from three centers: Kanazogone, Maryland and Bassein and the Church started growing steadily and successfully. Geographically in a flat region, the area of the diocese is 25,328 square kilometer with total catholic populations 71,490 (2010 statistic) and the majority of the catholics are from Kayin tribal group.

Together with the appearance of European Countries’ merchandizing, Portuguese adventurers and merchants arrived in Myanmar during the latter part of the 16^th century and the whole of the 17^th century. According to Burmese History there was no doubt about some Portuguese mercenaries who served Myanmar Kings and Dukes in the year 1556s and their descendants settled at Dacca, Chittagong, Pegu and Ava including Bassein (former name of Pathein). In the 18^th century, some European merchants and navigators were found established in Bassein, on the bank of the river at the southern extremity. At that time, Rev. Fr. Barnabite from Rangoon visited Bassein at least once a year for the special object of ministering to the spiritual needs of the small Catholic Community.
